Hotel Bergs
The Hotel Bergs forms part of a unique complex of eclectic style buildings, linked together by an open pedestrian walkway. This complex was named Bergs Bazaar, in honour of its creator, the well-known Latvian entrepreneur and public figure, Kristaps Bergs (1843 - 1907). At the end of the 19th century, Kristaps Bergs together with the architect Konstantins Peksens had the foresight to acquire and develop a plot of land to meet the needs of the burgeoning urban population. The land was located beyond the medieval walls of the city and was surrounded by small wooden houses, allotments and a cabbage patch. From 1887 to 1900, Kristaps Bergs developed the oriental-style Bazaar, creating 131 units that housed shops, a printing house and restaurants. The Bazaar was a unique architectural complex with its intersecting streets and walkways that bustled with live trade, traffic and pedestrians. During the Soviet occupation of Latvia, Bergs Bazaar became the property of the state, but was sadly neglected, thereby losing its unique charm and bustling atmosphere. In 1991, following the renewal of independence in Latvia, the descendants of Kristaps Bergs regained private ownership of the complex and began restoring this historic area of the city. The Bazaar has been officially recognised as one of Riga's architectural monuments - and in turn, is located within the historic area of Riga, included on UNESCO's World Heritage List.
Nowadays, Bergs Bazaar is an oasis for pedestrians in the city centre, with its carefully restored walkways, beautiful trees and shrubs, cosy cafés and restaurants, as well as its unique shops and boutiques. Bergs Bazaar is like a small town within a city, with its own community life and charm that reflects the best of contemporary Riga.
The restoration of the Hotel Bergs was carried out by Zaiga Gaile Architects, together with "Peddle, Thorp & Walker" Architects, based in Sydney, under the management of Andrejs Andersons. Building and restoration work took place in 2002-2003, by joining two historic buildings in the Bergs Bazaar. The hotel bears the symbol of a cabbage, in honour of Kristaps Bergs' vision, in constructing a modern and lively trading centre on a cabbage patch. Following reconstruction, the Bazaar is now an area of the city, where historical tradition is respected, yet successfully merges with contemporary style.
Contemporary design in the eclectic style building, which is owned by the Bergs family, allows each of our guests to enjoy an exclusive, yet family environment. The interior is dominated by graphics and restrained colours, as well as natural materials, such as leather furniture, oak floors, doors and windows. The linen furnishings were hand-woven by the Latvian textile artist, Laima Kaugure (whose linens are also popular with the fashion designers Calvin Klein and Giorgio Armani.) The choice of furnishing is bold in its originality, yet functions well as an ensemble - Latvian Old Masters merge with African traditional textiles and wood carvings, contemporary furniture and light fittings compliment the beautiful old fireplaces and items from the Bergs family collection.
The hotel also contains collections of Bergs family portraits, as well as paintings by Latvian classicists, such as Janis Rozentals, Janis Tilbergs and Gustavs Skilters. The main body of the hotel's art collection is an exhibition of 120 works by the contemporary Latvian stage designer and graphic artist, Ilmars Blumbergs, whose works also adorn the apartments. In addition Ilmars Blumbergs created the unique murals in the smaller conference room and sketched designs for the courtyard fountain, which are also on view at the hotel.
